 Richard and I re-entered South Africa at 1:30 pm on Thursday, 14 July 1960. We pushed on as far as Potgietersrus, where we spent the night in the local police station. The following morning – Friday, 15 July 1960: the fifteenth and final day of our trip – we resumed hitchhiking at 7:45 am after I took this photograph of the police station. Seven minutes later, we got a ride that took us all the way through to Johannesburg. After a total of 74 lifts and 2,469 miles, Richard Darley’s and my hitchhiking holiday adventure was over.
