
As a political scientist, I particularly liked this exhibit in one of Pearl Harbour’s museums. It’s the first draft of FDR’s speech to Congress, together with alterations that the President made to the typescript. As someone who has – albeit only occasionally – been known to use dashes when I write, I especially enjoyed seeing how Roosevelt changed “Yesterday, December 7, 1941, a date which will live in world history, the United States of America was simultaneously and deliberately attacked …” to “Yesterday, December 7, 1941 – a date which will live in infamy – the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked …” |
